Volunteer Opportunities

Young authors book project: poems of passion, protest, and power

A partnership with Olmsted Academy South

Young people are not just future leaders, but current leaders. Young people are often left out of important conversations in our country, but we know that their voices and imaginations are essential to a more just and joyful future—and we must listen and take action. This year, our Young Authors Book Project will follow the lead of our students. Together, we will build community and decide on themes and matters that are most important to the class and that exemplify passion, protest, and power. Throughout the project, students will grow their writing skills, learn how writing can be a powerful way to create change, and take part in the publishing process.

Program details:

  • Twice a week for 10 weeks

  • September 26-December 21

  • Tuesday and Thursdays, 10:15-11:15 am (you can sign up for just one day a week, if you'd like!)

  • Sign up to volunteer here!

River of words

A partnership with Olmsted Academy South and Louisville Water Foundation

This program will both explore how we relate to water and then look closer into how the Ohio River benefits our city. Students will be asked to think about how we use water, the power water has in our everyday lives, and reflect on their own experiences with our river. They will write odes to the Ohio River, imagine themselves as bodies of water, and write from the perspective of a creature living off a vulnerable river.

Program details:

  • Twice a week for 6 weeks

  • October 10-November 16

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:10-12:35 (there will be a 20 minute break for lunch) and 12:35-1:30 (there are two separate classes)

  • Sign up to volunteer here!

Songwriting

A partnership with Olmsted Academy South

In this program, students will work in small groups (bands!) to collaboratively write songs and poems. At the end of the project, each band will work with professional musicians who will help put their lyrics to music, and then each band will perform and record their songs

Program details:

  • Twice a week for 7 weeks (the final week will be the musician workshop week and we will meet every day)

  • September 26-November 30

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:25-3:20

  • Sign up to volunteer here!

Teenage parents on the rise

A Partnership with Georgia Chaffee TAPP School

In this project, students will write a book that explores what it means to be a teen mother. Students will share advice, wisdom, and reflections on motherhood, as well as poetry and creative nonfiction to inspire self-confidence and self-love. The final product will be a published book that helps other new students as they navigate through school and motherhood. We are specifically looking for volunteers who are mothers or who work in the maternal health space or Early Childhood Education.

Program details:

  • Once a week for 10 weeks

  • September 27-December 13

  • Wednesdays, 8:40-10:40 am (We know two hours is a commitment! You can choose to just come for the first hour, the second hour, or both.)

  • Sign up to volunteer here!
