In-School Programs

Olmsted academy South residency program:

Our residency program is a deep, multi-program, year-long partnership. Olmsted Academy South was our very first partner school!

Young Authors Book Project: Words To Nourish

In this project, students will use poetry and creative non-fiction to celebrate food and how food is central to care, memory, health, justice, and feelings. Through research and writing, students will explore how food shapes our histories, identities, communities, and futures. Together, we will write toward the meaning of nourishment—to feed, to cherish, to grow. 14 weeks each semester.

Songwriting:

In this program, students write collaborative poems as small groups (bands!) and shape them into songs. During the last week, local, professional musicians join the class to help put the lyrics to music for a performance and recording! Eight weeks, fall semester.

Write Your Way Forward

Seniors at Fern Creek High School and Iroquois High School team up with Young Authors Greenhouse volunteers to workshop their college entrance essays! Eight weeks, fall semester

The secret life of the ohio river

A writing project in partnership with The Louisville Water Company

The Ohio River sits between the border of our city and Indiana. It’s home to a variety of underwater creatures and unfortunately, alarmingly high levels of pollution. In this workshop, students will learn about fish and mollusks that reside in our river. They will then take a look at the found objects thrown into it and why they might have ended up there. Then, students will have the choice between writing a short story or poem from the perspective of one of the underwater creatures that dwell in the Ohio or about the imagined history of an object that has been thrown into the same river. Along the way, students will learn how this water gets transformed into the clean, drinkable tap water that we have access to.

The Details:

  • This program is for grades 6-8th

  • Six weeks, twice a week (12 sessions) led by Young Authors Greenhouse

  • The Louisville Water Company will visit the class and run a presentation

  • Students will have the opportunity to visit the Louisville Water Company for a field trip

  • Students will be published in a book in the spring of 2023

Exploring Galaxies Within: Memoir Writing and Podcasting

High school students will develop a memoir essay and podcast episode over the course of a semester. Through reading selected texts, listening to selected programs, free-write prompts, learning to “write for the ear” and garner feedback from each other, they will explore the personal journeys, memories and passions that make up their dynamic inner worlds.

Students will examine the genre(s) of podcast and how it relates to memoir. As a practice of interdisciplinary learning, use of technology, importance of oral history, composition of music and creation of art will be incorporated. Writers will have an opportunity to engage with a range of intersectional podcasts and audio based writing examples that explore themes of personal empowerment, relationships with the body, resilience, and cosmic connections.

The Details:

  • This program is for high schoolers

  • Twice a week for 12 weeks

  • Students will produce podcast to be released in the spring of 2023
