When a student says, I hate writing, we take it as a challenge, a catalyst. The beginning of listening, encouraging, and telling stories, of hard work and edits.  And later, we hear the transformation—I am proud of my work. I am an author. And honestly, we don’t know of a better ending.

By volunteering,  you can be a part of this. Volunteers are the heart and energy of our work. Whether you want to work directly with our students or you would prefer a behind-the-scenes, eyes-peeled-for-comma-splices job, we want to hear from you!

Volunteer Areas

OAS Writers' Room

Young Authors Greenhouse has a Writers' Room in Olmsted Academy South! Volunteers will help students one-on-one as they work on homework and creative writing projects. We provide support in all subjects—so whether you are a history buff, english expert, science champ, or math wizard, we’d love to have your help! Most importantly, we are looking for engaged, caring people with empathetic hearts.

Tutoring dates and times:

  • Mondays and Wednesdays, from 2:30-4:30 PM

  • Sign-up 1 to 2 days every week, every other week, or even once a month!

Writing Roadshows are one to two hour, pre-set, high energy writing lesson plans for elementary and high school. Teachers can choose an elementary fiction lesson, elementary poetry lesson, or a high-school essay lesson. Volunteers sit with students in small groups and encourage them through the writing process. Dates and times TBD!
